3 ICT centres inaugurated in Assin Central

Information and Communications Technology (ICT) centres have been inaugurated in the Assin Central Municipality in the Central Region.

The three centres are to enable students to obtain a variety of communication-related services to facilitate electronic learning.

The centres, which are sited at the Assinman Nursing and Midwifery College, the Obiri Yeboah Senior High School and the Atonsu MA Primary School, were constructed with support from the Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communications (GIFEC).

The Minister of Communications and Digitalisation, Mrs Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, inaugurating the centres, said the project was aimed at expanding digital capacity in unserved and under-served communities in the country to facilitate research and teleworking space to create more employment opportunities for the youth.

“It is the resolve of the government to accelerate the use of digital technology, applications and services at all levels to protect digital infrastructure and also enhance capacity building and skills acquisition for our youth,” she said.

The minister added that “the government is using digital technology to stimulate the growth and transformation of the economy”.

Cell site

Mrs Owusu-Ekuful also commissioned a cell site meant to receive and transmit radio signals for cellular voice and data transmission, at Bediadua in the Assin North Municipality.

She explained that the project formed part of a national broadband infrastructure development programme for the ICT sector for the provision of total connectivity for unserved and under-served communities.

“The rural telephony and digital inclusion project is currently being rolled out with the construction of about 2,016 solar-powered cell sites across the country,” she said.

She added that the project, on completion, would provide voice and data connectivity for rural dwellers, among other benefits.

The Administrator of GIFEC, Mr Prince Ofosu Sefa, said his outfit was putting the necessary measures in place to assist educational institutions, especially those in under-served communities.

The Municipal Chief Executive for Assin Central, Mr Nicholas Kofi Baako, commended the minister for the initiative, saying “it will go a long way to improve academic work in the beneficiary schools”.

He advised students to put the facilities to effective use and cautioned them against using it to perpetrate cybercrimes.
