The Commemorative Gold Coins is a suitable tribute to His Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, who played a pivotal role in restoring peace to the Dagbon kingdom in Ghana’s Northern Region following decades of protracted Chieftaincy conflict amongst members of the royal dynasty.
Otumfuo was also recognized for his involvement as a moderating influence in practically every Ghanaian election cycle. Furthermore, Otumfuor’s calming influence has facilitated peaceful elections, culminating in smooth government transitions, particularly when power was transferred between Ghana’s two leading political parties.
The face of Otumfuo appears on the front of the Gold Coin, along with the Adinkra symbols “Bi Nka Bi” on the left and “Mpatapo” on the right, which represent peace, harmony, and reconciliation.
The Golden Stool of Asanteman, also known as “Sikadwa Kofi,” is depicted on the reverse of the Gold Coin. According to legend, the Sikadwa Kofi, the Asante Kingdom’s most valued property and symbol of the Asante people’s soul was plucked from the heavens by the High Priest, Okomfo Anokye, and landed on the lap of the first Asante King, Otumfuo Osei Tutu I.
However, the bank of Ghana has approved the gold coin, which would be 999 percent (24 karats) fine gold with a diameter of 37.00 mm and a weight of 31.104 grams.
