UK Reacts As Nigerian Govt Lifts Ban

The British government has responded to the Nigerian government’s easing of a seven-month ban on the bird app, Twitter.

President Muhammadu Buhari ordered the suspension of Twitter in the country via his Minister of Information, Lai Mohammed, a few days after the platform took down a controversial tweet from him.

Nigerians reacted angrily to the announcement, even as the government threatened to prosecute those who persisted to tweet via any means.  Some Nigerians have also alleged that the ban was lifted to help the politicians market themselves well to Nigerians ahead of the 2023 elections.

The ban had a negative impact on the most active users of social media, the younger generation, who utilize it for trade, public relations, information, and business.

The British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Catriona Laing, applauded the decision, noting that social media plays an important role in promoting a free economy.

She tweeted, ”I welcome Nigeria’s decision to restore access to Twitter.

”Social media plays a valuable role in boosting a free economy and allowing the exchange of ideas – essential components of any open society.”
