Zoomlion launches greening, beautification of Ashanti

Zoomlion Ghana Limited has launched a new partnership with various institutions in the Ashanti Region to improve sanitation and greening as well as help Kumasi to reclaim its famous tag as the Garden City of West Africa.

Dubbed: “Cleaning, Greening and Beautification of Ashanti Region”, the project — being supported by the Regional Co-ordinating Council (RCC) — seeks, among other things, to ensure a better quality of life for the people by promoting good health.

Subsequently, the RCC has provided GH¢100,000 as seed money for its take-off.

The project is also receiving support from the Ministry of Local Government, Decentralisation and Rural Development, and the Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resources.

The Ashanti Regional Minister, Mr Simon Osei-Mensah, who launched the project in Kumasi, said the Ashanti Region had “identified the gaps of the previous clean and green campaigns and has taken measures to ensure that they are addressed as we embark on the project”.

He said the success of the project would be contingent on the involvement of all stakeholders, particularly the metropolitan, municipal and district chief executives who would be at the centre of implementation.

The Regional Minister expressed appreciation to the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, for his continuous support for the cleaning, greening and beautification of the region.

Improving sanitation

The Human Resource Manager of Zoomlion Ghana Limited, Mrs Gloria Anti, said the focus was to enhance an all-round and improved sanitation and strict enforcement of the by-laws at the assembly level.

She said if successful, the project would ensure a high level of cleanliness in communities within Greater Kumasi and its environs to safeguard the spread of possible infections and protect public health.

Ms Anti said the geographical scope would initially cover 13 districts and would eventually be extended to cover the entire region.

It will include the evacuation of refuse heaps, execution of greening of public open spaces, painting of curves and walkways, planting and maintaining of vegetation, regular weeding of road medians and many more.

As part of the project, a 13-member committee is to be formed for the day-to-day implementation of activities of the project.

The committee will include the military, the police, the fire service, representatives of Zoomlion, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Forestry Commission, the road sector, among others.

There will be free distribution of refuse bins to households, markets and other institutions in addition to public education and sensitisation on good hygiene practices and general discipline.

The acting Municipal Chief Executive of Oforikrom, Ms Gloria Gambrah, said the assemblies would be actively involved in the project to ensure its success.
