Court Prevents Governor Obaseki and Edo state Government From Enforcing Compulsory COVID19 Vaccine Directive

Governor Obaseki and the people of Edo has been restrained from entering churches, mosques and other public places by a court.

From the middle of September, a Federal High Court in Port Harcourt, the capital of Rivers State, has issued an order prohibiting Governor Godwin Obaseki and the Edo state government from enforcing a directive prohibiting all residents who have not received COVID19 vaccines from entering churches, mosques, banks, event centers, and other public places.

At a news conference last week, the state government announced that individuals who have not been vaccinated will be denied admission to public institutions such as churches, mosques, and banks. As he puts it

”From the second week of September 2021, large gatherings will only be accessed by those who have at least taken one dose/jab of the vaccine.

From the second week of September 2021, people will not be allowed into worship centres (churches and mosques), event centres, and receptions without showing proof of the vaccination cards.

From the middle of September 2021, you can no longer access the banking services, if you have not been vaccinated.”Governor Obaseki had said

The directive was challenged in court by several inhabitants of the state who were opposed to it.

At the hearing of Charles Osaretin’s suit, FHC/PH/FHR/266/2021, submitted on August 30, 2021, against the Governor and five others, the applicant’s lead counsel, Echezona Etiaba, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), urged the court to order the parties to maintain the status quo pending the hearing and determination of the motion on notice for the enforcement of the applicant’s fumigation order.
