Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, a ranking member on the Parliamentary Select committee on health has called for a review of the financial requirement one who wants to hire the services of an ambulance must meet during emergency cases so as to prevent deaths that could have rather been avoided.

Kwabena Mintah made this known while speaking to journalists in an interview following a visit to Takoradi where he and one of the members of the Health Committee, MP for Techiman North Elizabeth Ofosu Adjare went to commiserate with the husband of the nursing mother who died while being transferred in an ambulance from Takoradi at his residence in Shama.

He averred that although the laws indicates clearly what should happen with cases requiring ambulance services, there some people in certain positions of the administration taking advantage of victims and charging and taking monies that they are not supposed to take.

Kwabena Mintah quizzed the government to make it known once and for all if they are a running a ‘cash and carry’ system with the ambulance service.

Monitored by 3news, he said;

“If we think as a country, we want to make the [National] Ambulance Services cash and carry, we should say so, so that before anybody calls the Ambulance, he or she knows that you must pay for the service…”

“per our laws, especially the National Health Insurance Act, it clearly covers situations like this, especially when somebody is going to give birth and it is clear that you are not supposed to pay anything”.
